Vivian at a glance

Vivian is a town of 3,073 people (2020) in northwestern Caddo Parish, about 30 miles north of Shreveport on Louisiana Highway 1 and 11 miles from the Texas line. It's now the fourth-largest municipality in the parish. Many houses near Vivian sit on piers with skirting, and ducts run through the crawl space instead of the attic, where damp air and rodents cause their own problems.

Rural and spread out

The town is entirely rural by census definition, and homes sit on larger lots with plenty of trees that drop leaves into outdoor units. Hosston, Ida and Rodessa are small communities nearby, and contractors heading north from Shreveport often cover several of them on one trip. Redbud trees bloom across town each March.

A railroad town

Settlement began after the Kansas City Southern Railway came through in 1898, drawing people from communities on Caddo Lake to the new station, and Vivian incorporated the same year. Its Louisiana Redbud Festival, first held on March 26, 1964, is one of the longest-running festivals in the state. Older homes near downtown often have undersized ductwork; see attic ductwork.
